Hoe echtpaar een ondergrondse bunker uit WOII omvormde tot hun vakantiehuis

It is a ‘des res’ with a difference – for 70 years ago, it would have been the front line for guarding Britain’s cliffs against the Nazis.

Now the Second World War former bunker has been tastefully converted into the ultimate in secluded – and secure – holiday homes.

On the upside, it has fabulous 360 degree views around Land’s End from its grassy roof.

But on the downside is the rather chilling quality of its name – The Bunker – and the unconventional exterior may not be to everybody’s taste.

For owners Liz and Mike Strutton, converting the former sentinel was a true labour of love.

‘It is an amazing place,’ said Mrs Strutton. ‘It’s so secluded that it’s the sort of place you could live your life as a recluse.

‘There could be a zombie attack and nothing would get in,’ she added with a smile.

The couple came across the property by chance when, on a whim, they strolled into a Penzance estate agent and asked if there was ‘anything interesting’ on the property market.

They were shown a brochure for The Bunker, popped over to see it at a field near St Levan – and knew they had to have it.

‘We just fell in love with the place. We thought we might never see one again and if we did not grab it, we would regret it,’ said Mrs Strutton.

The Bunker was built to give the armed forces a bird’s-eye view of Land’s End and ensure the vital cable wireless station at nearby Porthcurno was well-defended.

A tunnel to link the two installations was originally dug into the cliffs, but this has long since collapsed.

After paying £145,000 for the bunker, the couple started to refurbish it – and it cost as much again to turn it into a four-bedroom home.

‘When we first looked around, it really was just an empty concrete shell.

‘There was nothing in it from the war, apart from a box of old fuses. There were no guns lying around or anything.

‘A farmer had been using it as a potato store and it was completely dry.’

One of the most important jobs was installing specialist tubes in the roof to ensure the interior was flooded with light.

‘It’s just like an ordinary four-bedroom bungalow. It’s not dark or anything,’ said Mrs Strutton.
